There is something remarkable about Namibia's Zambezi Region. While much of the country is famous for its vast deserts and dry landscapes, the northeastern corner of Namibia tells a very different story - one of winding rivers, green floodplains, abundant birdlife and a landscape that transforms with the seasons.
Here, the mighty Zambezi River sets the rhythm of life. From the arrival of the summer rains to the cooler winter mornings and the changing water levels that shape the river's wildlife, each season brings its own character and experiences.
Situated approximately 30km outside and to the east of the Zambezi region’s capital, Katima Mulilo, we are fortunate to experience these seasonal changes firsthand here at Muchenje River Lodge. One question our guests often consider when planning their travels is: When is the best time to visit the Zambezi Region?
The answer to this all important question depends on what you are hoping to experience.

As summer approaches, the Zambezi Region begins its annual transformation.
Between November and March, seasonal rainfall brings renewed life to the area’s landscape. The surrounding bushveld becomes greener, wetlands fill with water, and the region takes on the lush appearance that makes this part of Namibia so distinctively beautiful.
Temperatures are generally warm to hot, with refreshing afternoon thunderstorms bringing welcome relief to warmer days, building dramatic skies over the cool river waters.
For birding enthusiasts, this is a particularly rewarding time to visit. Summer brings migratory bird species into the region, while many resident birds become more active during the breeding season. The combination of water, vegetation and abundant insect life makes the Zambezi Region one of Namibia's most exciting birding destinations.
For travellers who enjoy photography, natural scenery and the quieter atmosphere of the green season, this is a wonderful time to experience the area.
On a side-note, it is worth noting that heavy rainfall can affect some gravel roads and regional excursions, so planning ahead is always advisable.
One of the most fascinating features of the Zambezi River is that its water levels do not necessarily peak during the wettest months around Katima Mulilo.
Interestingly, much of the river's water originates from rainfall further upstream, meaning the annual floodwaters often reach their highest levels between March and May.
During this period, the Zambezi can spread across its surrounding floodplains, creating expansive waterways and seasonal wetlands that support fish, waterbirds and other wildlife.
The changing landscape is impressive, particularly for guests interested in wetland nature and photography.
Higher water levels can also influence fishing conditions, boat excursions and access to certain areas. Guests planning to visit the region, and not only for the river activities during this season, are recommended to check the prevailing conditions prior to their arrival dates, as well as be patient in terms of any updates to their itinerary due to changes for their safety. We want you to enjoy your time in our little paradise, while remaining as safe as possible at all times.

For many travellers, the winter months offer some of the most comfortable conditions for exploring the Zambezi Region.
From May through August, rainfall is generally limited, daytime temperatures are pleasant, and evenings and early mornings can be refreshingly cool.
These conditions are particularly attractive to travellers who enjoy exploring without the intense heat of summer. It is a popular period for regional sightseeing, wildlife experiences and peaceful days beside the river.
For anglers, the winter months also bring exciting opportunities. As the Zambezi's floodwaters recede, fish begin concentrating in the main river channels, creating favourable conditions for certain fishing techniques.
June to August is often regarded as a particularly rewarding period for tiger fishing on the Upper Zambezi, although the best fishing conditions vary according to water levels and seasonal changes.
At Muchenje River Lodge, our guided fishing experiences offer guests an opportunity to take on the Zambezi's powerful tigerfish while enjoying the knowledge and experience of local guides.
As winter gives way to spring and early summer, temperatures begin to climb, and the Zambezi enters another exciting period during its life-cycle.
September and October are often among the hottest months around Katima Mulilo, but for anglers, birders and photographers, this season offers plenty of reasons to visit.
One of the region's most spectacular natural events is the annual arrival of the Southern Carmine Bee-eaters.
Generally arriving from late August, these remarkable migratory birds gather along suitable sandy riverbanks to breed. Their brilliant crimson and turquoise plumage creates an extraordinary display of colour as colonies fill the skies with movement and sound.

For avid birders and wildlife photographers, witnessing these gatherings can be a highlight of the year, not to mention a birding experience second-to-none when witnessing. The timing and location of colonies vary from season to season, making local knowledge especially valuable.
Lower river levels during the later dry season can also create different fishing opportunities.
What makes our Zambezi Region so special is that there is no single season of the year that defines its beauty.
At Muchenje River Lodge, each time of year offers a different opportunity to enjoy the river and its surroundings.
Our comfortable riverside accommodation provides a welcoming base for guests exploring Katima Mulilo and the wider region.
