A LITTLE HOPE ON THE ZAMBEZI

At Muchenje River Lodge, we believe that hospitality extends beyond welcoming guests to our beautiful corner of Namibia. It is also about people, community and lending a helping hand when an opportunity presents itself.

Alyssa's Journey with Hurler Syndrome

Born in September 2024, Alyssa was diagnosed at just seven months old with Hurler Syndrome, also known as Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I (MPS I).

This rare condition affects the body's ability to produce an enzyme responsible for breaking down certain complex sugar molecules. Without sufficient enzyme activity, these substances accumulate in the body's cells, progressively affecting vital organs, bones and other tissues.

For Alyssa and her parents, Jade and Trysten, the diagnosis marked the beginning of a challenging journey involving specialist medical care, regular hospital visits, enzyme replacement therapy and the pursuit of a stem cell transplant.

Although treatment can help slow the progression of Hurler Syndrome, the condition remains serious and requires ongoing medical attention. For Alyssa's family, securing access to specialist care has brought significant emotional and financial hurdles - challenges the Aldowrth family are facing head-on to help little Alyssa live the best life possible.

Through their determination, and the generosity of friends, family and complete strangers, Alyssa's story has touched hearts and brought greater awareness to this rare condition.

A Special Houseboat Experience for a Unique Cause

When the opportunity arose to help support Alyssa's journey, we were delighted that our Shamwari Houseboat could play a small part.

A three-night getaway aboard Shamwari, during October 2026, was offered as a raffle prize to help raise funds for Alyssa's medical journey.

The lucky guests enjoyed an opportunity to experience the beauty of the mighty Zambezi River aboard our floating lodge, while their adventure also carried a much greater purpose.

For us, it was a wonderful reminder that the experiences we share with our guests can sometimes extend beyond the memories made on the beautiful Zambezi River.

We are grateful to everyone who helped make this initiative possible and hope that our little contribution has helped bring further awareness to Alyssa's story.

How You Can Help Alyssa

Alyssa's journey is a reminder of how important community support can be for families facing rare challenges such as what Alyssa is going through.

Beyond financial contributions, raising awareness of Hurler Syndrome and encouraging people to register as potential blood stem cell donors can make a meaningful difference to patients and families facing similar challenges.

For those interested, we encourage you to take a moment to learn more about Alyssa, follow her journey and consider supporting her family's cause.

You can read more about Alyssa's story, access her fundraising campaigns and find information about becoming a potential stem cell donor through her official (Linktree) page:

From all of us at Muchenje River Lodge, we wish Alyssa and her family continued strength, hope and courage on the journey ahead.

Sometimes, making a difference begins with something as simple as sharing someone's story.
